How to Hit Your Protein Target on Mounjaro When Nothing Appeals

Weight coming off quickly is not automatically a good thing. Some of it is fat and some of it is muscle, and the ratio is largely decided by two things: how much protein you eat and whether you use your muscles at all. On Mounjaro, protein is the one nutrient worth actively planning.

This is general food guidance. Your prescriber or a dietitian can set targets specific to you, particularly if you have kidney disease or other conditions.

A workable target

Most general guidance lands around 1.2–1.6g of protein per kilogram of body weight for people losing weight quickly. For many adults that is somewhere between 80g and 120g a day. If that sounds unreachable at current appetite, ignore the daily figure and aim for 25–30g per meal instead — it is the same destination, in pieces you can see.

What 25–30g actually looks like

  • A 150g chicken thigh — about 30g
  • A 170g pot of Greek yoghurt — about 17g
  • Three eggs — about 18g
  • A tin of tuna — about 25g
  • 150g cottage cheese — about 18g
  • A scoop of whey — about 25g
  • 150g cooked lentils — about 13g

Two of these in a day already gets you halfway.

Eat it first

The order matters when you can only finish part of a plate. Protein first, vegetables second, carbohydrate last. If you stop after a third of the meal, you have still had the part that counts.

Liquid protein on bad days

A shake with milk, or a smoothie with yoghurt and frozen fruit, delivers 25–35g without asking you to chew through anything. Sip it over an hour rather than drinking it in one go.

Cook once, eat several times

Cooking is the barrier more often than eating is. Roast a tray of chicken thighs, boil a batch of eggs, keep cooked prawns in the freezer. When the effort is already done, a meal becomes a plate rather than a project.

Use your muscles

Protein alone will not protect muscle. Two short resistance sessions a week — even bodyweight at home — makes a measurable difference to what you keep.
