What to Eat on Mounjaro: A Practical Food Guide

The hardest part of being on Mounjaro is not resisting food. It is working out what to eat when you barely want anything at all. Appetite drops fast, meals you used to love suddenly feel heavy, and a plate that looks normal can feel impossible halfway through.

This guide covers what actually works day to day. It is food guidance, not medical advice — your prescriber is the right person for dosing, side effects that worry you, and anything to do with your health conditions.

Protein first, every single meal

When you are eating far less overall, the composition of what you do eat matters much more than it used to. Aim to put protein on the plate before anything else: eggs, Greek yoghurt, chicken thigh, salmon, tinned tuna, prawns, tofu, lentils, cottage cheese. If you can only manage a third of a meal, you want that third to be the protein.

A practical target most people find manageable is 25–35g of protein per meal rather than a big daily number that feels intimidating. Two eggs and a pot of Greek yoghurt gets you most of the way at breakfast.

Cook smaller portions on purpose

Serving a normal-sized plate and abandoning two thirds of it is demoralising, and it wastes money. Cook to the appetite you actually have now. A single chicken thigh, a handful of vegetables and a few spoons of rice is a complete meal at this stage — not a failure of one.

Texture matters more than flavour

Most people on tirzepatide find that dry, dense or very rich food becomes unappealing long before anything else does. Things that tend to stay easy: soups with beans or shredded chicken, saucy curries, scrambled eggs, yoghurt bowls, poached fish, slow-cooked meat. Things that often become hard work: dry chicken breast, crusty bread, big salads, heavily fried food.

Drink more than feels necessary

Reduced appetite usually means reduced fluid too, because so much of our water comes with food. Dehydration makes the headaches, constipation and fatigue noticeably worse. Keep water within arm's reach and treat it as part of the routine rather than something you do when thirsty.

Eat slowly and stop early

Fullness arrives suddenly rather than gradually. Eating quickly is the single most common cause of the discomfort people describe after meals. Put the fork down between mouthfuls and stop at the first real signal — the second signal is unpleasant.

A simple day that works

  • Breakfast: Greek yoghurt, berries, a spoon of nut butter
  • Lunch: chicken and vegetable soup, or eggs on one slice of toast
  • Dinner: salmon or chicken thigh with soft vegetables and a small portion of rice or potato
  • If needed: cottage cheese, a boiled egg, or a small protein shake

Three modest meals beats one large one you cannot finish.

Where people go wrong

The most common mistake is drifting into eating almost nothing, because nothing appeals and cooking feels like effort. That is when muscle loss, hair thinning and exhaustion start. You do not need to eat a lot — you need to eat deliberately.
